The circular driveway at 505 Parnassus

There is a proper drop-off here, and it's worth knowing where: the circular driveway leading to the main hospital entrance at 505 Parnassus Avenue. The other option is the curb in front of the Ambulatory Care Center at 400 Parnassus Avenue, a hundred yards downhill, which is where a lot of clinic appointments actually happen. Tell us which one your letter names and the driver goes there.

That distinction matters more on this campus than most, because Parnassus is built into a hillside above the Inner Sunset. Walking between the two buildings means a genuine grade, and the residential streets behind the hospital are permit-only and steep. From SFO it's about 15 miles, roughly 30 minutes off-peak and closer to an hour into the evening commute, at a flat $65 either way.

What the garages actually cost

UCSF runs the Millberry Union public garage at 500 Parnassus Avenue, with entrances between 400 and 500 Parnassus and another on Irving Street at 3rd Avenue. Both charge by the hour with a daily cap, and the 350 Parnassus garage meters faster, which makes it the worse of the two for a long visit. UCSF does offer valet at the Ambulatory Care Center at no extra charge, if you'd rather hand the car over than circle.

We list those numbers because they're the honest comparison. If you're here for a single short appointment and already have a car, driving is fine. If you're flying into SFO, or coming daily for a treatment block, a flat fare each way usually wins before you've counted the airport parking you'd also be paying for.

Long referral days

Parnassus is a referral hospital, so a lot of its patients aren't local. People fly in for a specialist consult, a surgical evaluation or a second opinion, and the day stretches: imaging in the morning, clinic in the afternoon, a conversation that overruns. At 8am you rarely know when you'll be free.

So don't pin the return. Book the ride in, then text us when you actually finish — each direction is its own flat fare, so splitting them costs nothing and no meter runs while you wait. If someone else is arranging this from another state, book with your own card and put the traveler's name and mobile in the notes; the driver texts them directly on arrival, and our hotel guide covers places within reach of the campus.

Frequently asked questions

Which entrance do you use at Parnassus?

The circular driveway at the main hospital entrance, 505 Parnassus Avenue, unless you say otherwise. If your appointment is at the Ambulatory Care Center, we drop at 400 Parnassus instead — it's a separate building and an uphill walk between them, so it's worth naming the right one when you book.

Is this cheaper than driving and parking?

Depends on your trip. The Millberry Union garage charges by the hour with a daily cap, and UCSF offers free valet at the Ambulatory Care Center — so for one short visit with a car you already have, driving is reasonable. For a flight into SFO, or daily visits over a treatment block, the flat fare each way is normally cheaper once airport parking is in the sum.

Can you take a wheelchair or walker?

Foldable wheelchairs, walkers and mobility aids ride in the trunk at no charge and drivers help load them. We don't operate lift-equipped vehicles, so the rider needs to be able to transfer into a regular seat. The 505 Parnassus driveway is the easier of the two drop-offs for this.

I don't know when I'll be discharged. Can I book the return later?

Yes, and we'd suggest it. Book the ride in, then text or call the number on your confirmation when you know your time. The price is the same whenever you book it.

Parking, entrances and visiting rules change, and we're a car service rather than the hospital. For the current details, see the official UCSF Parnassus page. We keep this page updated as we learn of changes, but the operator is always the authority.
