This is the thing worth knowing about Mission Bay: the drop-off circle is in front of the Gateway Medical Building at 1825 4th Street, and it serves the adult hospital at 1855 4th Street as well. So even if your letter says 1855, the car pulls up at 1825 and you walk across. Valet is complimentary. Drivers who don't know this hunt for a hospital entrance that isn't set up for it.

1855 4th Street holds the Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital and the Bakar Cancer Hospital under one roof; 1825 is the outpatient building; Benioff Children's Hospital sits on the same campus. Name the building when you book and we'll get you to the right door on a campus that's large and easy to misjudge on foot.

A lot of families arrive here after a referral they weren't expecting. Parents fly into SFO with a child, a diagnosis and a suitcase, and the ride from the airport is the last thing they want to think about. Mechanically it's the easiest hospital run in the city — about 12 miles straight up US-101 or I-280 into flat, modern streets, 20 minutes on a clear freeway and up to 45 in traffic. Flat $65 either direction.

These trips rarely mean one passenger with one bag. It's usually two parents, a sibling, a stroller and luggage for a stay of unknown length. Say who's coming when you book and we'll put the right vehicle on it — a 7-seat minivan costs more than an SUV, but you see the exact fare before you pay, not after. Bring your own car seat and the driver waits while you fit it, at no charge.

Chase Center is two blocks from the hospital. On event nights the streets around Mission Bay fill with twenty thousand people, and the approach that takes fifteen minutes on a Tuesday becomes something else entirely. UCSF warns patients about it for good reason.

We watch the arena schedule on this route and leave earlier when it matters — and because the fare is fixed at booking, sitting in that traffic costs you nothing extra. It's the clearest case on our whole service area for why a flat rate beats a meter.
