Look at the ocean,not the road
Half Moon Bay, and the forty miles of Highway 1 either side of it — the cliff walk at Devil's Slide to the north, the lighthouse at Pigeon Point to the south. Nine stops, eight hours, out at eight in the morning and back before dark, and not one thing on the route charges admission.

The good parts have nowhere to park
Every car park on this coast is free, which is exactly why they are small and why they fill. A rental car turns each stop into a hunt. A driver turns it into a door.
Devil's Slide has two lots, one at each end of a mile and a third of old highway, and on a clear weekend both are gone by eleven. Fitzgerald holds a few dozen cars. The cypress grove at Moss Beach has no lot at all — only a residential street where nobody should leave a car for an hour. Wavecrest parks you at a baseball field a fifteen-minute walk from the bluff. We leave at eight for that reason before any other.
Two of these are out-and-back on foot only because you have to return to your car. With a driver they stop being out-and-back: we put you in at one end of the Devil's Slide trail and collect you at the other, and the cypress line at Wavecrest becomes a walk to the cliff edge rather than a walk to the cliff edge and back again.
And the road itself is one you cannot see from the driver's seat. Highway 1 below Pacifica is blind curves, no shoulder and a drop on the ocean side for eleven miles. Whoever drives it looks at asphalt all day — which is most of the reason people book this rather than rent.
Eight in the morning, back by four
North of Half Moon Bay in the morning while the lots are still empty, then three stops in the town itself — the harbour, the bluffs and Main Street — and the twenty quiet miles south to the lighthouse after lunch. Times are what the day looks like if nothing changes, and something usually does — your driver will happily re-cut the order in the car.

The rocks immediately around the Pigeon Point tower are fenced off to stop erosion and protect nesting birds, and drones are not allowed in any of the state parks on this route.
One price for the car, and no gate to pay at

Day three, once the city is done
People who have done the bridge and Alcatraz and want the coast the postcards are actually of. People who would otherwise rent a car for Big Sur and do not have three days to give it — this is the same road, the same cliffs, ninety minutes from their hotel instead of five hours.
And families where one adult would otherwise spend the whole day driving instead of looking at any of it.
If you only want the cypress trees, eight hours is too long
- The Moss Beach grove is forty minutes from the city and the Wavecrest line is fifty. Two stops and lunch is a four-hour afternoon, and we would rather sell you that than pad it
- The eight-hour day earns its length on the twenty miles south of Half Moon Bay: Pescadero, Bean Hollow and the lighthouse are the emptiest coast within reach of the city, and nobody arrives there by accident
- Winter is the clear season here. From June to August the marine layer often sits on this coast until midday, which is why the summer version starts later rather than pretending the fog is not there
- The half day is quoted by hand — ask for it with your date.
Can we climb the lighthouse?
No. The tower has been shut since December 2001, when two 300-pound sections of its cast-iron belt course fell off. Restoration began in February 2024 and State Parks is aiming to reopen it by spring 2027. The grounds, the day-use area and the Fog Signal Building are open — the original first-order Fresnel lens, sixteen feet tall, now stands in there at ground level where you can actually see it. Admission and parking are free.
How much walking is there?
Wavecrest is the only real one — fifteen minutes each way on a flat dirt track, and worth proper shoes. Devil's Slide is paved and level the whole way. Moss Beach is five minutes down a lane, with a staircase to the cove if you want it. Everything else is a car park and a view. None of it is compulsory; the car is always the nearest thing to you.
What if the tide is wrong for the pools?
Fitzgerald only works at low water — at high tide it is just a beach. We read the tide table against your date when you book and move that stop earlier or later in the day to meet the low. If your date has no usable low tide in daylight we tell you that instead of driving you there.
Does this work on an arrival or departure day?
Departure day, yes — 8:00 to 4:00 leaves an evening flight comfortable, and the luggage stays in the car all day rather than in a hotel store room. Arrival day only if you land before seven; otherwise the morning half is gone, and the morning half is the part with empty car parks.
October?
Half Moon Bay's pumpkin farms draw a fair share of California every October weekend, and Highway 92 backs up for miles with them. This day comes in over Highway 1 from Pacifica, which is the road it takes anyway, so the drive is fine — but Main Street is crowded and lunch is slower. Say so if the pumpkins are the point and we build the day around the farms instead of the lighthouse.
