We don't publish a fixed rate for Big Sur yet. Enter your address in the booking form: where we have a rate for it you'll see the fare at once, by vehicle; otherwise a person confirms it by text or phone before you commit, usually within the hour. Either way it is one flat all-in price — no surge, no meter, no per-bag charge, and the tolls and the SFO airport fee already inside it.

Pickups between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. add the published night fee, shown before you pay. Tip is not required.

Why travelers book this route

Big Sur is about three hours from SFO, and the last hour is Highway 1 on the cliff edge — a road with no lighting, no shoulder in places and, for much of it, no phone signal. It is a spectacular drive and a poor one to attempt jet-lagged in the dark in an unfamiliar rental.

The lodges out there are the point of the trip: people come to stop moving for a few days, and a car sitting in the lot for three nights is expensive furniture. A transfer down and a transfer back leaves you with nothing to drive and nothing to park.

Nothing scheduled goes there, and a rideshare on a three-hour one-way with no return fare is a bet on finding a willing driver. A booked car has the driver, the time and the fare settled before you fly.

Your pickup at SFO

Arrivals curb, flight tracked, driver confirmed by text

Book online in about a minute — no account, no app. A person reviews the request and texts back to confirm the ride and the fare; on the day, the driver texts before pickup and again on arrival. Then it is the drive to Big Sur, direct, with no other passengers and no stops.

Add your flight number

We track the flight. A late landing moves your pickup rather than losing it, and there is no waiting fee for flight delays.

Meet at the arrivals curb

Collect your bags and step out to the arrivals curb at your terminal. We text your driver's name, car and plate before you land.

Luggage goes in the car

The driver loads at the curb and unloads at your door. Enter your bag count when you book so the right vehicle comes — the minivan for a family or four large cases.

The way back, curbside

For the ride to your flight home, the driver drops you at the departures level of your terminal, with the pickup time set against your check-in.

About Big Sur

Big Sur is the ninety miles of coast between Carmel and San Simeon: Point Lobos and Garrapata at the north end, the inns and restaurants along the highway around the river valley, Pfeiffer and Julia Pfeiffer Burns further south, and Bixby Bridge somewhere in every photograph of the place.

We don't publish a fixed rate past Carmel: the drive is long, the road is weather-dependent, and the honest thing is to confirm the fare personally before you commit rather than print a number and revise it later.

  • Highway 1 closes after big storms and slides, sometimes for months. We check the road before your date and tell you if the drive has to change; the alternative inland route adds time, and we say so before you book, not on the day.
  • There is little phone signal south of Carmel. Give us the property name and a check-in time, and we confirm the details by text before you leave the airport.

The way back

Big Sur to SFO private car service

The return leg books in the same form at the same rate: set the pickup to your inn or lodge on Highway 1, the drop-off to SFO, and add the flight number — we set the pickup time against the check-in your airline wants, allowing for the traffic on the way, and you review the whole trip before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from SFO to Big Sur?

About three hours with the roads clear — down 101, across to the coast and then Highway 1 past Carmel — and longer to the lodges at the southern end. Your driver plans the timing; the fare you were quoted doesn't change.

Why is there no published rate?

Because the drive is three hours each way on a road whose condition changes with the weather. We confirm the fare personally before you commit — one flat all-in price, the SFO airport fee already inside it, and nothing added later.

Can you pick us up directly at SFO?

Yes. Add your flight number when you book and we track the landing. Collect your bags, step out to the arrivals curb at your terminal, and your driver is there — we text the driver's name, car and plate before you land. There is no waiting fee for a late flight.

Our flight lands in the evening — can you still drive us down?

Yes, and it is worth booking rather than improvising: Highway 1 after dark is no place to be reading a map. Pickups between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. add the published night fee, shown before you pay.

Which car should we book?

The seven-seat minivan is the entry car on this drive, with the premium SUV and the Black SUV priced in the booking flow. Tell us the party size and the bag count and we'll say which one fits.

Can you drive us from Big Sur back to SFO?

Yes, at the same rate as the way down. Choose round trip when you book the ride out and both legs book together, each with its own pickup time and confirmation. Or book the way back on its own, with the flight number so we allow for the coast road.
