Why travelers book this route
Sonoma is about an hour and a half from SFO, over the Golden Gate and across the flats of Highway 37 — a pleasant drive when someone else is doing it, and an awkward one to start from a rental-car counter after a long flight. About Sonoma
Sonoma is the town at the foot of Sonoma Valley, built around its plaza and the old mission, with hotels and inns on the square and along the roads out toward Glen Ellen and Kenwood.
It is closer to SFO than most of Napa Valley, and Napa itself is twenty minutes east across the Carneros — if your trip covers both valleys, either town works as the base.
