This is the single most useful thing on this page: the hospital's listed address is 3555 Cesar Chavez Street, but that entrance is closed. The main entrance is at 555 San Jose Avenue, around the other side. If you type the Cesar Chavez address into a map — which is what most people and most drivers do — you arrive at a door you can't use.

We take you to San Jose Avenue. The paid public garage is at the corner of Duncan Street and San Jose Avenue and runs 24 hours, and street parking nearby is capped at two hours for non-residents. From SFO it's about 14 miles and often under 25 minutes when I-280 is clear, since the freeway drops you close without crossing downtown. Flat $65 either direction.

Between the Mission and Bernal Heights, this is the hospital long-time San Franciscans know as St. Luke's. It's smaller and quieter than Sutter's Van Ness flagship — around 120 beds — with a 24-hour emergency department, women's services with certified nurse-midwives, and an orthopedic institute doing robotic-assisted joint replacements.

It also holds Level II Geriatric Emergency Department accreditation and runs an Acute Care for the Elderly unit, which is worth knowing if you're the person flying in because an older relative was admitted. That's a large share of the rides we do to this address.

Most people coming here for a procedure are told not to drive afterwards and not to take transit alone. That turns one trip into two, several hours apart, and the second lands at an hour nobody can predict — sedation wears off on its own schedule.

Book the ride in, then text us when you're actually discharged. Both directions are the same flat fare, so splitting them costs nothing, and no meter runs while you wait for paperwork. Drivers help you into the car and take it slowly. If you're having a joint replacement here, say so when you book — an economy SUV sits higher than a sedan and is easier to get into afterwards.
