The far corner of the city

The San Francisco VA Medical Center sits at 4150 Clement Street, out past the Richmond District near Lands End — about as far from the airport as you can get and still be in San Francisco. It's roughly 17 miles from SFO, the longest of the city's hospital runs, and takes 35 minutes on a clear day or an hour when the crosstown streets are busy.

The fare is a flat $65 either direction — the same San Francisco rate as hospitals half the distance away, because the city price doesn't change with the mileage. On this route that works firmly in your favor.

Parking here is actually free

We'll be straight with you: unlike most San Francisco hospitals, parking isn't the problem here. There's patient and visitor parking in front of Building 1 and a free valet garage. If you live within driving distance and have a car, drive.

The case for booking a car is different at this address. It's the veterans flying in for a specialist appointment they can't get closer to home, landing at SFO with no vehicle at all, and facing the longest hospital transfer in the city. The 38 Geary runs directly to the medical center, but it's a long ride from the airport end with luggage.

Veterans traveling in for care

The medical center serves veterans across a wide stretch of Northern California, well beyond the Bay Area, and runs its own transport connections out to clinics in Eureka, Ukiah and Santa Rosa. Plenty of the people we drive here flew in that morning and will fly back the same day or the next.

For a same-day round trip, book the ride in and leave the return open — text us when the appointment finishes and we'll come then. Both directions are the same flat fare, so there's no advantage to guessing a time in advance and no penalty for booking late.

Travel benefits and paperwork

Some veterans are eligible for VA travel reimbursement for appointment-related transport. We're an independent car service, not a VA-contracted provider, so we can't bill the VA directly — you book and pay us, and we email an itemized receipt with the date, route and amount, which is what a reimbursement claim usually asks for.

Check with the VA travel office about what your eligibility covers before you rely on it. If you need a place to stay around an appointment, our hotel guide lists city options with airport pricing attached.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you drop off at the VA?

At the main entrance by Building 1 on the Clement Street campus, or another building if you name it when booking. The campus is large and organized by building number, so it helps to say which clinic you're headed to.

Is parking hard at the VA?

No — there's patient and visitor parking in front of Building 1 plus a free valet garage. If you're driving in from the region, that's the sensible option. Booking us makes sense when you're flying into SFO without a car, which is most of what we do on this route.

Can you bill the VA for my ride?

No — we aren't a VA-contracted transport provider. You pay us directly and we email an itemized receipt showing date, route and fare, which you can submit if you're eligible for travel reimbursement. Confirm your eligibility with the VA travel office first.

It's further than the other hospitals — does it cost more?

No. Anywhere inside San Francisco is the same flat city rate, so the extra distance out to Clement Street doesn't change the fare — which makes this the best-value hospital run in the city.

Parking, entrances and visiting rules change, and we're a car service rather than the hospital. For the current details, see the official SF VA Medical Center page. We keep this page updated as we learn of changes, but the operator is always the authority.
