Second-time visitors
People who have already done the bridge and the boardwalk and want the version of California with nobody in it. Photographers, oyster people, and anyone who would rather look at the Pacific than a queue.
Pairs well with wine: Sonoma cheese and a Russian River tasting room slot in on the way home if you want a shorter coast and a glass at the end.
This one needs weather
Point Reyes fogs in for whole days, and in thick fog the lighthouse is a white wall and the coast is a rumour. We will tell you the forecast the night before and swap you to the wine day at no charge if it looks bad — the coast is worth waiting for a clear one. The swap goes to Napa & Sonoma, same hours.
Whale season?
January to April, from the lighthouse headland — grey whales, close in. The park runs shuttles on peak weekends and we time the day to them.
Are the oyster sheds bookable?
Some take reservations and fill weeks ahead; others are first-come with barbecue tables. Tell us when you book and we hold what can be held.
Is the road difficult?
CA-1 is narrow, winding and occasionally closed by slides. It is a road for someone who drives it regularly, which is most of the argument for the car.
Can we add wine?
Yes — a Russian River or Sonoma tasting on the way home works with one coast stop dropped. Same nine hours, same price.
