The drive: downtown to SFO
Downtown San Francisco — Union Square, the Financial District, SoMa, Nob Hill, and the Embarcadero — sits about 13 to 14 miles north of SFO. Outside of rush hour the drive takes 20 to 30 minutes down US-101; on a weekday between 7–10 AM or 3–7 PM, plan on 35 to 50 minutes. Your driver watches traffic and picks the faster of 101 or I-280, which often saves ten minutes when 101 backs up near Candlestick.
Because the fare is flat, the route choice and the traffic are our problem, not yours — the price you see when you book is the price you pay, at 5 AM on a Tuesday or 6 PM on a Friday.
How we compare for this trip
A metered taxi from downtown to SFO typically runs $55–70 before tip. Rideshare apps quote $35–60 for the same trip and spike higher during morning departure waves and rainy evenings. BART is the cheapest way down (about $11 from Powell Street, roughly 30 minutes) and we genuinely recommend it if you're traveling light and your hotel is near a station.
Where a booked car wins: early flights before BART starts running, families with luggage, and anyone who doesn't want to gamble on a surge price while checking out of a hotel. You book the night before, the driver texts you when they're outside, and the fare doesn't move.
Hotel and apartment pickups
We pick up from any downtown address — hotels on Union Square, offices in the Financial District, or an apartment in SoMa. For hotels, the driver meets you at the main entrance or valet curb; tell us the cross-street for large buildings and we'll be at the right door. Going the other way, we meet you at your terminal's arrivals curb — see our SFO terminal map if you're new to the airport.

Frequently asked questions
Can you do a 4 AM pickup for a 6 AM flight?
Yes. Early departures are our most common downtown booking — BART isn't running yet and rideshare coverage downtown is thin before 5 AM. Book the night before and the driver will text you when they're outside your hotel.
Does the price change if traffic is bad?
No. The fare is flat and agreed when you book. If the Bay Bridge backup spills onto 101 and the trip takes an extra twenty minutes, that's on us.
We're two people with four large suitcases — what should we book?
Book a minivan. An SUV handles two to three large bags; four large suitcases plus carry-ons want the minivan's cargo space. You'll enter your luggage count when booking so the driver arrives with room to spare.
Is this really better than BART?
Not always — BART is cheaper and often just as fast to downtown. A private car makes sense before 5 AM or after midnight, with more luggage than you want to carry through stations, or when three or four people travel together and split one flat fare.
